Ageing Stories: Narrative Constructions of Age and Gender
International Conference at the University of Greifswald
Narrative constructions of age in history,
attitudes on ageing,
and representations of age in different
modes of story telling and
history writing will be the central issues
of the conference. While
looking at the ways in which Gender Studies
have shaped the
methods and modes of history writing, these
insights will be
applied to the category of age.

What meanings are attached to age and
ageing in the narrative process? In what
ways do medical and biological concepts of
age merge with those applied to the
individual life course? How do
physiological and cultural constructs of
ageing interact in story telling?

Narratology will serve as a reference frame
for new perspectives on age, bringing
together scholars from Cultural Studies as
well as the Life Sciences.

Four aspects of narrating age will be
addressed in the Sections:
I. Age and Memory
II. Embodying Age
III. Talking Age
IV. Mediating Age
